Family visit

Image
This past weekend my parents, Michael's mom, my brother, and one of our best friends came to visit. Whew. It was a fun-filled weekend that left everyone exhausted and satisfied, I'm sure. I started getting antsy Friday at lunch at the realization that all of these people would be coming to visit our new life for the first time ever. It's always stressful (eustress) for me to have elements from different periods of my life mix. I'm never sure how friends and family will all get along or how I'll balance time with all of them. I'm not sure what to do with them here, since I'm used to doing things with them elsewhere. But overall I think everyone would deem the weekend a great success. Friday night flew by, as I knew it would, in a blur of frenzied conversation and hugs and anecdotes. Saturday was much the same, but we got to switch up locations. At one point it was funny to see everyone just stop and breathe (in their own ways). Hi Zoe. Faile...

Last weekend

First of all, last weekend was Mother's Day, so I hope all the moms enjoyed it and everyone else showed them how important they are. Without them society could not survive, for a number of reasons. Namely, I think we can all agree that these are faces only a mother can love: This weekend Michael and I also made the final decision to look seriously into getting a pet. More specifically a cat, because, while we are both dog people, it is just cruel to trap a dog in a third floor apartment with our schedules.  So a kitten it is. This is a first for me. I'll be honest, I grew up hating cats. Sincerely. They're weird and they lick themselves a lot and they weren't overly friendly. But Michael and my college roommate, Rachael, taught me how cool cats can be and when we saw this little lady on Saturday, I just knew I wanted her in my life. She had no name and she was in a crate with about five other kittens, but she kept to herself. She had p...

It's official

Today marks the completion of my first year postgrad.  It's been quite a year. I moved back to Charleston, published history books, nannied some great kids at the beach, making regular trips to Little Mountain, SC. I moved to Atlanta, nannied two more kids here,  got married in Charleston over Christmas, worked for Pregnancy & Newborn magazine in Atlanta while living in Marietta, and recently moved to Sandy Springs and hold a current position as a Sales Research Assistant at a computer software company, ClickDimensions. Can't say that's what I'd had planned right out of the gate, but God's plans are always better than ours and I'm right where I'm supposed to be. I am glad he didn't reveal any of it to me beforehand because I'm not sure how I would have handled it. But Michael and I have both found jobs we really enjoy and a community here with more love for us than we know what to do with sometimes. Our cups are overflowing. It...

Last Friday Night

While it was no big affair (nor was there any dancing on table tops), Michael and I finally got to sit down together and watch a movie.  It seems silly, but with all the crazy additions to our schedules and lists of responsibilities lately we hadn't had a chance to do that in quite a while. So we put on pajamas promptly at 6:30 and popped in a favorite, the Help . This is one of the few movies I could literally put on at any time--or multiple times--and watch contentedly. It's a classic--or will be one day, I just know it. But how can we watch a movie without snacks? So as we watched Minnie teach Ms. Celia not to burn fried chicken for the umpteenth time, we decided to give it a try. The old fashioned way of course (read: a paper bag and Crisco were, in fact, involved). So we whipped out the chicken and flour, tossed them in the paper bag, and fried them up on the stove. Honestly, we both felt pretty sick afterward and while it was ...
